Clovernook Center provides an array of services and programs to aid consumers with low vision or blindness. Clovernook offers an array of services with independent living. Services including visiting the participants home to help them become more independent by placing braille or bump dots on appliances. Orientation and Mobility offers services that will assist the participant to navigate with-in their home and environment.
ORIENTATION & MOBILITY
Orientation and mobility services teach safe, efficient and effective travel skills to adults with low or no vision. Clovernook Center’s team of orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists provides instruction to help adults develop or re-learn the skills and concepts they need to travel safely within their home and in the community. O&M specialists provide services in a variety of community-based and rehabilitation settings.
Our Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) must adhere to a professional code of ethics and demonstrate knowledge and teaching skills in the following areas:
- Sensory development, or maximizing all of your senses to help you know where you are and where you want to go
- Using your senses in combination with self-protective techniques and human guide techniques to move safely through indoor and outdoor environments
- Using a cane and other devices to walk safely and efficiently
- Soliciting and/or declining assistance
- Finding destinations with strategies that include following directions and using landmarks and compass directions
- Techniques for crossing streets, such as analyzing and identifying intersections and traffic patterns
- Problem-solving skills to determine what to do if you are disoriented or lost or need to change your route
- Using public transportation and transit systems
SUPPORT GROUPS
Clovernook Center facilitates Low Vision Support Groups to introduce blind or visually impaired individuals to others in their community who face similar challenges. Friends and family are welcome to attend these Support Groups who meet the fourth Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. and are led by Clovernook Center’s Vocational Habilitation Coordinator. The goal is to help individuals be self-sufficient and full participants in their communities.
CASE MANAGEMENT
Clovernook Center offers individual case management services to anyone who are blind, visually impaired, and physical or intellectual disabilities. Services include, taking to medical appointments, reading mail, and paying bills and offering support as needed. For more information call the Director of Program Services at 513-728-6286.
